Think 9 of his 25 goals for england have been penalties, which is a huge percentage.

Can't remember even being given so many in the past.

At least the cunt is good at them which is good for england.

A goal is a goal
A real money for old rope hat-trick for Kane yesterday. Am sure he will end up as England’s leading scorer with qualifying groups like this.
It’s a bit like Beckham ending up with more caps than Bobby Moore with all the friendlies and extra qualifiers against dross.

Why should penalty kicks count when saying somebody scored a hat trick?

jfk,

The Maradona comparision was written massively 'tongue in cheek" by myself. If you read my post, i said that all our players were as good as Maradona meaning that i could never admit to the limitations of any of our players at senior school.

My whole point has been that Bishop, although a great servant and good to watch, was never close to the best, along with the rest of our squad at the time.

I remember most of our best results in the top flight in that era were when we were struggling and having to turn the last 10 games or so into cup finals, in order to stay up.

I'd even add that
L us the fans helped massively, with regards to us staying up, further emphasising our limitations in the playing department.

Re: England vs Bulgaria - Rice starts
The problem as always is that the qualifying groups are very average and England have a frankly abysmal one here.
Two teams (Bulgaria & Czech) who used to have decent teams but don’t any more and then Kosovo and Montenegro who the average person would struggle to name any footballer from.
Southgate will qualify likely having won every match but has to try and develop a team that can stand up when challenged by proper football teams.

Declan played in second gear just knocking around 96 out of 100 passes while trying to coax some movement out of a pretty turgid group ahead of him while trying to keep Harry Maguire from dropping in & trying to do his job.
Agree what England need is a bit more creativity in the middle.
Is that player around? All the more reason to see if Maddison or Mount are that player against such limited opponents

I saw most of the game and Dec played really well in what ended up as a convincing performance from England.

My 1st idol was the Bish.........I'm pretty sure the fact he used to swallow Morleys cock affected me long term.

Re: England vs Bulgaria - Rice starts
Loved the Bish... he was the footballer I tried to model myself on...but unfortunately I ended up more of a David Batty or Norman Hunter... on his day he was an absolute joy...remember one game away to Norwich it was almost the perfect game of football... none of this 2 yard to get keeping it simple...twas 90 mins of probing beautiful judges passing experience that was up there with the best I have ever seen...on his day a absolute joy...and he could look after himself...remember a 50/50 with Mr Vincent Jones and the one standing at the end was my hero with the poofy hair...long live the Bish

Re: England vs Bulgaria - Rice starts
I seem to remember him being quite ungainly on the ball - I remember a lot of arms and hair waving about. If I had to bum a man it would be Ian Bishop of the early 90s

jfk 3:28 Sun Sep 8
Re: England vs Bulgaria - Rice starts
Bishop was a good player for us and very skill full but to even mention his name and attempt to make even the wildest comparisons with Maradona,De Bryene and Pirlo is fucking nonsense

The only thing Bish had in common with Pirlo was his haircut.

Was a hero in our colours in a difficult time but Jesus Fucking Christ...

I liked Timmy Breacker - steady, strong and loved to overlap.

Problem is tnb, Bishop was too slow then, and the game has speeded up even more, now.

He maybe could got away with it, if he had a trick up his sleeve, to buy space, but he didn't. Given time yeah, he could pick a great pass - but against the best, you don't get that. Because we saw him run rings week in, week out, in the old second division, that's where the rose tinted views come from.

Yes, he had the odd good game against the top teams, but it was just that, the odd good game.

Maybe, if he played in a better team, he would have been better - but then, if that was the case, the top teams would have taken him off us - like Cottee to Everton and Dicks to Liverpool .

tnb 12:51 Sun Sep 8
Re: England vs Bulgaria - Rice starts
Yeah well you and me both SADW. But I still think Bishop aas underappreciated at the time and would be valued much more these days. I also thought Tim Breacker should be playing for England around the same time, but I've realised over time that was optimistic. Bishop sticks in the memory though, almost a player ahead of his time. I honestly can't remember anyone striking a ball so well, at least in a 'cultured' sense as opposed to Dicks' incomparable wallop.

That's a bit better, tnb.

I have to admit I like your 'So bloody there' comment, too.

The funny thing is, at the time, I would have said Bishop was better than Maradona, in fact i would have said that all our players we're better than Maradona.

But that was because i was at seniors and was completely and utterly blinkered and unable to say a bad thing about anything West Ham.

Unfortunately, i grew up slightly, and started to live in the real world.

Hoddle was a good playmaker. Before him would have been Brooking. And then we need to go back to Bobby Charlton, he was unquestionably world class.
